What has become a familiar sight actually originated in the not too distant past. Prior to the attacks of 9/11, U.S. Presidents did not wear lapel pins. Soon after the tragic events in 2001, President George W. Bush initiated what has become tradition with subsequent presidents and vice presidents alike. His wearing of a U.S. flag lapel pin, although small, became a symbol large in meaning. Constantly visible with the President’s every move, the pin displays a message of hope, resolve and unity that resonates today with our nation’s leaders and citizens as well.
