The Outer Banks (or OBX as they are affectionately known) of North Carolina have long been a destination for beachgoers, sports enthusiasts, and those who look forward to relaxation and simply getting away from it all. With a wide variety of attractions and sites, from Jockey’s Ridge to the Wright Brothers Memorial, there is something for everyone in this unique coastal area on the East Coast.
Regardless of how you choose to spend your time, a must for everyone is knowing a local spot with a reputation for good food and a good vibe. Located at milepost 5.5 in Kill Devil Hills is an establishment co-owned by Kyle, BJ and Mark. “Two Roads Tavern” is a joint venture between these three friends who spent the last 10 years working together at Lucky 12 Tavern in Nags Head, NC. Many restless nights were spent drumming up a new restaurant concept until finally “Two Roads Tavern” was born. A shared passion for fine burgers and delicious oysters has resulted in a casual atmosphere with vintage flair that they hope to share with you.
Where is Kill Devil Hills?
Kill Devil Hills is located at 36°1′32″N 75°40′12″W (36.025448, −75.670105), on the barrier islands known as the Outer Banks. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.5 square miles (14 km2), of which, 5.5 square miles (14 km2) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) of it (0.36%) is water. Kill Devil Hills is the most populous settlement in both Dare County and on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The town is home to the site of the Wright brothers’ first controlled, powered airplane flights on December 17, 1903, which were commemorated by the Wright Brothers National Memorial, which was dedicated in 1932. At the time of their flight, the town of Kill Devil Hills did not exist, having received its municipal charter in1953. Kitty Hawk, popularly noted as the site of the famous flights, is approximately four miles (6 km) to the north, and was the nearest settlement at the time of the famous flight.
What kind of address is a Milepost?
Many newcomers to the Outer Banks who are browsing the local restaurants, shops and area attractions online or in the local guide books notice an interesting addition to the standard address. Besides the typical business name, street name, street number and town, many local businesses also include a Milepost number. The milepost designation is generally used for businesses from Kill Devil Hills to South Nags Head. This 20 mile stretch of beach is fairly narrow, with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the sound located on the other, so many of the major attractions are located in plain view, somewhere along the main road or the beach road in Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head. New businesses realized in advertisements, brochures, and even old fashioned phone book listings that vacationers wouldn’t necessarily recognize a street number or road name. As a result, mile markers became incorporated into advertisements and listings.
Kyle, BJ, and Mark look forward to your stopping by “Two Roads Tavern” at Milepost 5.5 in Kill Devil Hills. Come hungry and come often!
