Capitol. President-elect Donald J. Trump will take the oath of office administered by the Chief Justice to become the forty-fifth President of the United States since 1789.
Family Background
Born June 14, 1946, Donald John Trump grew up in the Queens Borough of New York City, the fourth of five children of Fred and Mary Anne Trump. Frederick Trump was a builder and real estate developer who specialized in constructing and operating middle-income apartments in Queens, Staten Island and Brooklyn. At the age of 13, Donald was sent to the New York Military Academy, where his parents hoped he could channel an assertive, energetic personality in a productive manner.
By the time he graduated in 1964, Trump had become a top athlete and student leader and went on to Fordham University. After two years, he transferred to the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania from which he received a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1968. In 1971, he became the president of his family’s real estate and construction firm. Trump is married to Melania Trump and is the proud father of five children and grandfather of eight grandchildren.
Business Enterprises
Noted as a “billionaire, real estate mogul, and reality television personality”, Trump became one of New York City’s major developers in 1980 when he opened the Grand Hyatt. Throughout his business career, Trump has built, renovated or managed numerous office towers, hotels, casinos and golf courses, and negotiated extensive licensing agreements to brand numerous products. As the host and co-producer of the reality television series The Apprentice and Celebrity Apprentice from 2004-2015, Trump became well known in popular culture and his signature side-swept hair style remains a trademark of his persona.
Foray into Politics
In 2015, Trump announced his candidacy for president of the United States on the Republican ticket. Having toyed with running numerous times in the past, his latest foray into the arena was met with skepticism and amusement. However, despite a crowded field of 17 contenders, his unorthodox campaigning style and performances during primary debates resulted in him winning the majority of primaries and caucuses. He officially accepted his party’s nomination for president at the Republican National Convention on July 19, 2016.
Trump selected as his vice presidential running mate, Mike Pence, the current Governor of Indiana. From 2000-2012, Pence served six terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he championed legislation that promoted smaller government and economic growth for the nation. A strong supporter of the military, while in Congress, Pence visited Hoosier soldiers in Iraq and/or Afghanistan every year since hostilities began.
Campaign Platform
According to a synopsis on the website greatagain.gov, “Mr. Trump entered the 2016 presidential campaign because he was deeply concerned about the direction of the country. His motto has been to “Make America Great Again” by bringing jobs back to Americans through renegotiated trade deals and a reformed tax code, securing our borders and restoring the rule of law, repealing and replacing Obamacare, strengthening our military, caring for our veterans, and unifying Americans. He believes that the United States of America is the greatest country in the world, and that the American people unified and working toward a common goal can restore our standing around the world as a beacon of freedom, strength and prosperity.”
In the November 8th general election, Trump’s democratic opponent, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, won the popular vote by more than two percentage points, but with 306 electoral college votes, Donald Trump had more than enough needed to secure the presidency. Donald Trump’s stunning win was formally declared December 19, 2016 when the 538-member Electoral College cast its votes. At age 70, Trump will become the oldest and wealthiest person to assume the presidency, superseding Ronald Reagan and George Washington, respectively. He also has the distinction as the only person in U.S. history to have been elected president without having held public office or serving in the military.
